The Salads toss swag to students

Self-proclaimed ambassadors of fun times, Toronto-based band The Salads' music has been featured in national beer ads, Hockey Night in Canada, the Olympics and movies.

Since their mainstream success, stemming from their break-out 2003 hit “Get Loose”, The Salads have been busy touring Australia and cranking out their brand new CD, “The Big Picture”, as well as DVD.

The band was formed by Dave Ziemba (guitar), Chuck Dailey (bass) and Grant Taylor (drums), when they were in seventh grade, while singer Darren Dumas joined in 1999.

They hold down their own gigs at colleges, bars and clubs, while simultaneously touring with the Warped tour, Edgefest, and Labatt Blue Motel.

Tracks off their previous albums, “Meanwhile...The Salads" (1998), "Who's That?" (2001) and “Fold A to B” (2003), gained them a strong following who highly anticipated the May 2006 release of “The Big Picture.”

Success hasn't been a smooth road for The Salads. While making “The Big Picture”, the band's home and recording studio was broken into and everything of value, including their entire computer bank of pre-recorded songs, was stolen.

Another set back came when the drummer's car was stolen right before they were booked for a recording session.

“The Big Picture: these words can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people.

In every day life, armchair executives and compromising politicians throw these words about like rice at a Hindu wedding. So, for it to have any meaning at all, it's really only as powerful as the person that utters them, and the audience that hears them,” said the members of The Salads in response of their new album's name.

“There are ups and downs like in any family but those first tours, you're partying together, you're crashing together, and you're waking up together... you start to see everything — including the guys you're playing with — in a different light,” said singer Darren Dumas.

The Salads latest album is said to be the coming of age for the band, with deeper more meaningful tracks and a more developed sound.

“We've started looking beyond everything and taking everything ... and standing back from it; looking at it as a whole. That's why our new record is called “The Big Picture,”said lead singer Dumas.

The first 10 students to the Interrobang office, SC1012, get a copy of “The Big Picture” and poster to match.
