Achievement Awards given to dedicated and distinguished

Fanshawe College President Peter Devlin revealed the list of the President’s Distinguished Achievements Awards winners on September 25 during his President’s Update speech.

Recipients of the teacher, part-time teacher, staff, part-time staff, administrator, leadership and research awards each receive a crystal award. They also get the opportunity to direct a $500 contribution from the school to an existing bursary or student award.

The program award recipients receive a crystal award and a $2,000 contribution from Fanshawe to improve the program.

The team award recipients receive a crystal award and a $5,000 contribution from the school to use to improve student and customer experience.

Fanshawe students and employees had until March 31 to nominate an employee or a group of employees. The recipients were chosen by the President’s Distinguished Achievement Awards Selection Committee.

DISTINGUISHED TEACHER - Jim Van Horne

“Humbling. Very humbling,” the co-ordinator of the Broadcast Journalism and TV News programs said.

Van Horne also teaches in both programs.

“To see the teachers that have won this award and some of them I’ve known quite well and know the reputation of the others, I always thought, ‘Oh, my goodness, those people are so amazing.’”

DISTINGUISHED STAFF - Debbie Obokata

“It’s definitely an honour,” said the programmer and analyst at information systems services.

“I was surprised. Actually, when I was approached when they were nominating, I was really surprised when I was informed that I was selected.”

DISTINGUISHED TEAM - The Aviation Technician Team

“I’m very proud of team,” said Rob Gorrie, the chair of the School of Transportation Technology.

“They’ve done a lot of work in a very short time, under some very rough conditions. We had to relocate all of the aviation equipment from Z building, which included a number of aircrafts and components and engines and equipment tools … to Y building, which is the Jazz heavy maintenance hangar at the airport that we purchased.”

DISTINGUISHED PART-TIME TEACHER - Ann Marie Csendes

“I’m extremely flattered,” the part-time teacher in the business and hairstylist programs said. She’s also the Fanshawe administrator for Oxford County and a library technician. “I was actually nominated by the program co-ordinator … it was supported by Donna Derer, our campus chair, and Lisa Wells [manager of Continuing Education and Contract Training at Fanshawe’s Woodstock campus]. And there was also a video that they had created with testimonials with different students from different programs. It just made it all that more special and flattering”

DISTINGUISHED PART-TIME STAFF - Knyvet Carson

“It’s a great honour,” the program officer said.

Carson looks after the intramural and extramural ice hockey teams.

“I was quite surprised that I received the award.”

DISTINGUISHED RESEARCHER - Martin Volkening

“I’m certainly excited and mostly for the team that I’m working with,” said the professor, who teaches in the School of Applied Sciences and Technology.

“It’s sort of (like) someone picked one name out of this. It’s certainly not me alone. There’s a lot of help I’ve had from my colleagues to make this work.”

DISTINGUISHED ADMINISTRATOR - David Belford

“I’m very, very pleased and grateful to get the award,” the dean of the Faculty of Business said.

“I know that many people get nominated every year, so it was quite an honour for me to receive the award this year.”

DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP - Denise Luksys

“I’m honoured,” the project co-ordinate of Project and Construction Management said. “I take my job seriously, and I commit myself 100 per cent when I’m here at work. So, to receive the leadership award, I’m honoured to be recognized for the hard work that I do.”

DISTINGUISHED PROGRAM - Renewable Energies Technician

“[The program] is equivalent to a two-year program, but we run it in 12 months fast tracked,” said Ross Fair, chair of Fanshawe’s St. Thomas/Eglin campus.

“The goal of the program is to teach our students to install, maintain and repaid commercial-grade wind turbine and solar-powered energy facilities … We’ve graduated two classes — we’ve just finished our second year running the program. The 2013 class and the 2014 class have all found work within the renewable sector on graduation: 100 per cent job placement.
