Letter to the editor: Airing 9/11 documentary disrespectful

Submitted: September 11,2006

I watched some of the coverage of the 9/11 anniversary before heading to class on Monday and was expecting to see similar coverage throughout the day at Fanshawe. What I actually saw when I got there was TV sets rolled out across campus, including the Student Union Building and Forwell Hall, showing tapes of Loose Change, a conspiracy theory/documentary which contends to draw a direct link between the U.S. Government and the attacks.

I don't care how you feel about George W. Bush, The United States, or even if you believe some of the conspiracies that surround 9/11, but the fact is that thousands of innocent people from all over the world died that day. 9/11 should be reserved as a day to remember those victims. Airing that documentary on the anniversary was completely disrespectful to all of the victims and their families. Quite frankly, I was disgusted.

What the fuck were you thinking? I agree that post-secondary institutions should be a forum to present alternate points of view- but, whatever group or individual that thought it was acceptable to play that 'documentary' on the anniversary of the attacks really had a serious error in judgment. Any other day it would have been acceptable, but not on the anniversary of the most defining moment in most of our lives. Whoever worked to make it happen should be ashamed.
