Fanshawe student passes away at age 20

Tragedy strikes Fanshawe College.

Devon Ashley Schmelter, born on February 8, 1986, passed away on Saturday, October 14 2006. Schmelter was in his first-year of the Industrial Maintenance program at the St. Thomas campus.

“The College community is deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of its students, Devon Ashley Schmelter of Aylmer,” said representatives from the College.

“Our deepest sympathies are extended to Devon's family and friends at this difficult time.”

Schmelter's funeral took place on Wednesday, October 18 at St. Pauls United Church in Aylmer.

Schmelter was the beloved son of Erich and Brenda (Watson) Schmelter of R.R.# 5 in Aylmer and the dear brother of Dwight Schmelter.

He is loved by his grandparents Manfred and Johanna Schmelter of R.R.# 5 in Aylmer and Margaret Watson of Aylmer and the late Reg Watson (2005). He is also the great-grandson of Herta Schmelter of Germany, and nephew of Roger and Marianne Watson, Brian Watson and Ursula and Bart Haight. He is survived by many cousins.

Born in St. Thomas Ontario, Schmelter is said to have enjoyed spending time outdoors with his friends.
