Those looking to live a health lifestyle, but are not sure where to start, will gain the help they need with a nutrition class run by the Fanshawe Student Wellness Centre.

Fanshawe's very own Student Wellness Centre is hosting a nutrition class for those students and staff that want to get fit and healthy. The nutrition class runs on Monday evenings from Feb. 26 to April 2 and Thursday evenings from March 1 to April 5 and conducted by Karen Nixon-Carroll, the program manager at Fanshawe's Student Wellness and Fitness Centre.

The class is free and runs for six weeks. The class will teach students and staff about meal prep, meeting your goals, portion control and building your own meal plan. It will also include a grocery tour, planning, organizing and changing your lifestyle.

Everyone has a general goal when it comes to getting fit and healthy and this nutrition class is where to go if you have any questions about starting out healthy or if you need some tips and tricks to add into your healthy lifestyle.

“It's not about the outcome, but it's about the behaviours of the outcome the class. It's about figuring out what maybe is unhealthy behaviours you have and maybe we can fix those,” Nixon-Carroll said.

The class will teach students and staff about nutrition labels and some health myths like drinking a glass of wine everyday is healthy for your heart or how the media portrays healthy eating and fitness. The six week class does require students and staff to fill out a questionnaire and a booklet beforehand. If this stream of classes are successful, there might be more in the future.

“This class is to help educate people, to read between the lines, gaining a better overall view on what is better health wise,” Nixon-Carroll said.

If someone has a fitness and health goal and does not know where to start, this class is a good fit. Either way, Nixon-Carroll, along with the rest of the staff at the Student Wellness Centre are there to guide you along the way and help fitness and wellness user meet their goals and/or change lifestyles for the better.
