Exec Corner: Is Facebook consuming your life?

Everyone is probably aware of the new online fad called “Facebook”. Many people who are already connecting with long lost friends or current friends on this website know what I am talking about. Those of you who heard of it, but haven't yet set up an account cause you don't want to follow the crowd, you will cave eventually after your friends persist long enough. Everyone always does.

I myself said I would never get it; in fact I made fun of my friends for using it because I didn't get the purpose or really understand it at all. After being persuaded I gave in like the rest of you have or are about to in due time. Just like MSN, everyone will eventually be linked or connected some how to this new network of friends. I personally think it's a great way to stay in touch with your colleagues and old friends, when used in moderation.

This new phase of MSN can be dangerous to a career, your school grades, and your reputation. Many people don't realize that employees may be able to read things on these websites and access a lot of what you post on these websites very easily. Facebook and My Space are very similar and are both accessible by your employers or anyone for that matter.

Many people are blaming Facebook for bringing down there average in school, because their spending to much time getting caught up with gossip or looking up long lost friends that they went to elementary school with.

Many students feel they have to check their accounts along with their e-mails and MSN before they're able to buckle down and really focus on their studying or homework. To make matters worse now the college has many laptop mandatory classes and computer classes, which only raises the temptation for students. Guys don't kid yourself; we know you're on these websites during class, perhaps while your teacher is teaching a very valuable lesson. This is another reason for students marks being affected due to this new age addiction.

Now for those of you that thought you could keep a secret it is now harder then ever. Every day you are updating your profile and/or posting on someone's wall to say hi or tell them about your day. You are able to see if someone is dating and if their in a relationship with someone you know or don't know. You can see who their friends are and how they met or know each other. This new way of staying in contact with friends and family makes it very easy for stalkers and friends to keep tabs on their acquaintances lives while that individual may not even realize it. This is why we all must remember to spend limited time on these websites and be aware that the information we display on the Internet may be viewed by random un-wanted guests or get into the hands of the wrong people.

I am not trying to scare you Fanshawe I just want to make you all aware of the risks and maybe think twice about making that wall post on your friend's wall or posting that drunken picture of yourself in your album.
