Falcons on course to repeat as champions

History could be repeating itself.

The Fanshawe Falcon women's soccer team defeated Seneca College 2-0 in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) quarterfinals on October 22nd to advance them to the semifinals. The Falcons will meet Durham in the OCAA semifinals.

Head coach Eva Havaris said her team started slow but got the momentum going in the second half, finishing the game strong.

“Overall we played a good game,” Havaris said.

Heather Danylchuk and first-year striker Amanda Roberto were the goal scorers for the Falcons, who will look to defend their OCAA title this year.

Havaris said they are going to look to neutralize Durham's key players in their OCAA semifinal match-up.

“Durham is a strong offensive team. We are going to pick out their strengths and mark out the few players that have been successful all season for them,” said Havaris.

Havaris said that despite winning the championship last season she feels that the 2006 version of the club good be even better.

“This years club has the potential to be even stronger then last year,” Havaris said.

“In terms of skill and player quality, this years team is better. We are a smaller team and have a deeper bench. Everything seems to be coming together right now, the team is really gelling together at the right time.”

Havaris noted that team captain Emily Costello has played solid all season, and Danylchuk, Roberto, Sarah Nishikawa, and Colleen Patterson have all played very significant roles as well this season.

Algonquin will face Humber in the other semifinal match of the OCAA championship, which will be hosted by Sheridan College from October 27 to October 28. The Falcons first game will start at 5:00 p.m.
