Sports in Seconds: Stars are shining in the NBA

NBA superstars will look to lead their team to championship glory.

The NBA regular season got under way Halloween night, with the defending champion Miami Heat getting trounced by the Chicago Bulls, 108-66.

Playing in that contest was last year's NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Miami Heat guard Dwayne Wade, who contributed 25 points in a losing effort. Wade is one star amongst many in the NBA who will look to lead their respected teams to championship glory.

One star that is shining brightly early this season is Lebron James.

The 21 year-old Cleveland Cavaliers forward is being touted as the next Michael Jordan, and is predicted by countless sports writers across North America to be the MVP of the NBA this season.

Polls are surfacing across the Internet of how many Championship rings James will win and whether or not he will create a dynasty in Cleveland, similar to Jordan's in Chicago of the 90's.

James' individual talent is undoubtedly, and without question, incredible and above the standard of even many all-star players in the league, but I think it is safe to hold off on the Championship talk for a while.

James' supporting cast in Cleveland fails in comparison to some other superstars in the league — see Wade and his large sidekick Heat centre Shaquille O'Neal's championship rings from last year.

Superstars like San Antonio's Spurs forward Tim Duncan, Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitski, and Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash all have a team that compliments each other and plays together.

It can be argued that other players on the three aforementioned teams are more vital to their team's success — Spurs guard Tony Parker, Mav's forward Josh Howard, and Suns forward Amare Stoudamire.

Players like James, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, and the Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett will all put up the big numbers statistically, but will be unable to carry the load individually for the entirety of the grueling NBA season.

When Jordan was winning championships, he had Scottie Pippen to pick up the slack, and role players like Horace Grant and Dennis Rodman to do the dirty work.

This season may have some interesting happenings involving the leagues elite come trade-deadline time.

Along with the Timberwolves Garnett, Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson and Boston Celtic's forward Paul Pierce could very well be joining a new team at some point this season.

The addition of one of these three superstars would definitely shift the balance of power in the league and, if teamed up with another NBA star, could create championship chemistry for a potential franchise.

So if you're waiting for a prediction, as to who will win the title this year and which star will gain MVP honours?

I will go out on a limb and say the two-time MVP Steve Nash will not win a third straight award, but will lead his team the Phoenix Suns to the NBA championship.

And, as much as I don't like to admit it, I think Kobe Bryant will take home MVP honours this year, he'll win the scoring race, and improve upon the Lakers record from last year.
