What, me Worry? Exploring opinion on abortion

I'm writing this specifically as a rebuttal to that other big Christian bollix, Nathan Welch - the president of the so called Fanshawe Students for Life club, and the author of a bit of that bit of Christian propaganda cleverly disguised as a letter to the editor last week.

Firstly though, a message to the students at Fanshawe. I'm just going to say this once, where were all of you when this bullshit group was setting up shop right here in the school? Where were all the feminists and women's rights groups that I hoped would at least make an effort to set up a booth to remind students not to become apathetic, and not forget what women had to go through in order to receive these rights (If not rein hell on these simpletons?)

I sat for almost an hour in front of their booth in the SUB watching them convert poor, susceptible, gullible Fanshawe girls. And not even a peep of protest. Very sad. I sat there thinking, “isn't this an institutional learning facility? Where are all the educated folk?” And, “why are half of the so called "Students" for Life, middle aged women who were obviously not students, and at least another 25 per cent male?” I'd like to ask those guy's to make a decision on abortion the day they get pregnant. I'm just going to ask you once to stop spreading your bullshit fabricated reality around the school.

You say, and I quote, “women are not fully informed about the many psychological and physical side effects of abortion including post abortion syndrome, depression, infection, scarring and even breast cancer.” Students deserve better than this. Let's see if we can't clear some of these issues up for you shall we?

Anyone who has done even the most rudimentary research will find that all case studies that claim there is a link between abortion and cancer rely primarily on case control studies which are known to be heavily biased and highly unreliable. Confused? Let me help:

If I wanted to do a study on the ties between cancer and religion, and I only picked cancer patients who were highly devout Christians, than according to your logic, It would be logical to conclude that Religion causes Cancer. But of course you know all this, you just don't want the students to know as well. This same argument can be applied to infection and scarring; both of which are unproven.

As far as “Post Abortion Syndrome/Depression” goes, I have this to say: much like the other myths, the clinical tests that are done on this subject, tend to be done by doctors with a conclusion in mind long before the tests ever begin. It's just a matter of manipulating the variables.

Of course there are women who become depressed after terminating a pregnancy, after all, there are people out there like yourself that are constantly whispering sweet nothings like poison pills in their ears.

You deliberately use words like “life,” and “baby,” to refer to something that is little more than tissue that is an extension of a woman's body for at least the first trimester of their pregnancy. Who could blame them for being upset, when the last thing they see on the way into the hospital is a bunch of crazies carrying signs and yelling bloody murder. It is people like you who are to blame for so called PAS. Own up.

I can't imagine what it must be like for the poor girl who is born into a Christian family, and made to feel like a whore for getting pregnant. Her whole life is over, because MEN and women like you who will never have to make that decision, think it is your place to tell her how to feel about herself.

I'd like to wrap this up by saying thank the good lord for those people who were handing out condoms to students to fight AIDS. I was appalled to see that members of the “students” for life group were actually trying to deter other (actual) students from taking the condoms, so that they could practice celibacy. Why are regressive troglodytes like this allowed in the school? They should be banned along with other hate groups that spread propaganda based on unsubstantiated half-truths.

Please girls, if you need help, there really are places you can turn and people you can trust; I recommend visiting your local Planned Parenthood for honest bipartisan counseling, or visit them online at http://www.cfsh.ca/ppfc/. They will help you to make your own decision to follow through with the pregnancy or not, with no pressure. Don't make a mistake that you will inevitably regret for the rest of your lives. And for those Christians who want a bipartisan opinion, I recommend http://www.religioustolerance.org/.
