Sonic the Hedgehog got off to a bumpy start, but watch the film and you'll see Sonic hit his stride.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie hit theatres on Valentine’s Day — and not many people were expecting it to be as good as it was.

I remember sometime last year seeing a huge controversy over the animation of Sonic. A lot of people at the time did not think the movie had any potential due to its poor quality.  I was a little hesitant going into the movie the other day due to some mixed reviews I have been seeing online, but I do not regret going to see it.

The movie started with a little tribute to all the games Sony had produced over the past decades, which was amazing to see as a late ‘90s baby. I was a little judgemental beforehand but when I looked past the animation and began to watch the film I personally felt like it was a great movie.

The movie stars Ben Schwartz (Sonic), James Marsden (Tom) and Jim Carrey who plays the evil villain Dr. Robotnik. Each member of the cast fit their role perfectly. Carrey as Dr. Robotnik was hilarious and he played the villain really well. For me he was my favourite part of the movie.

Everything from his costumes to the voice of his character was spectacular. When comparing the character of Dr. Robotnik from the movie to the video game we do see a lot of similarities, but we also see how Carrey brought new elements to the character and made it his own.

When you look past the graphics and animation problems the story being told is an overall good one. This movie was intended for children but personally I feel as if it is a movie for all ages.  Everyone knows who Sonic the Hedgehog is and have waited a long time for a movie about Sonic. The movie tells a story about how Sonic came to be and there is a cute little scene in the film that expresses how he got his iconic red shoes.

If you are feeling unsure about seeing the movie I say definitely go and see it for yourself; I have so much to talk about, but I don’t want to give it all away.  I’m usually one who does not enjoy silly movies like this one, but it left me with a good impression.  There was this cute post-credits scene that featured Tails and it left me wanting a sequel.

Sonic the Hedgehog was pretty much well done and it was very enjoyable. There was a lot of action mixed with a lot of good family-friendly comedy so if you choose to go see a movie with a younger child they would be OK. Overall it is a fun night out and a great form of entertainment.
