Big Sisters offers opportunity to Fanshawe students

Brush aside that comb-over, Donald Trump.

Big Sisters of London announced a fundraising event that mimics the hit America series “The Apprentice.”

The Big Apprenticeship was created by Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Ottawa and the London branch will be organizing a contest where five teams of five people will compete for a 10-week paid internship with five local business people, who will act as judges for the competition.

Owner of KCI Management and a Big Sisters Board member, Kimberly Clarke, is chairing the event.

“This event has the potential to be a dynamic force in the region by bringing together enthusiastic young people with well-established, inspiring mentors to raise funds for Big Sisters of London,” Clarke said. “It is an opportunity to do some good in the community while learning from some of the region's greatest leaders.”

Interested participants have until Wednesday, February 28 to bring together a team of five people of which the team captain will be asked to submit the team's resume with a one-page special event project plan for a solid and innovative fundraising event organized for the benefit of Big Sisters of London.

Anthea Rowe, Communication Officer for the event, said that this opportunity is great for Fanshawe students to gather relevant career-related experience.

“This is a great opportunity for Fanshawe students looking for meaningful work experience,” Rowe said. “The five winners will be mentored by senior executives and their jobs will cover a range of workplace roles, the emphasis is on giving creative, bright individuals exposure to real-world business situations, not on slaving away in the mailroom.”

Each of the final five selected teams will have an eight-week span to execute their event with the support of a coach, graphic designer and printer.

The five judges will convene on April 30 to choose the winning team and whose members will have the opportunity for a $10/hour, 10-week paid internship with one of the five companies represented by the judges.

The judges and their respected companies include; Paul Cocker, Chairman and CEO, McKay-Cocker; Helen Connell, Executive Director, United Way of London/Middlesex; Mary Lou Greenwood, Director, Consumer Major Accounts, Rogers Cable; Greg Dinsdale, Senior Vice President, LBMX Inc.; and Joe White, Senior Manager, The Athletic Club.

Cost to enter the event is $30 and according to John-Paul Renzella Vice President Internal for the FSU up to five entries will be covered by the FSU for interested Fanshawe students.
