Men's hoops remain perfect with 10-0

Perfect season is still in tact for men's basketball, but improvements are still in store.

After defeating the Lambton Lions 86-73 on Wednesday, January 31, the Fanshawe Falcon men's basketball team owns an undefeated 10-0 record in regular season play. The team is sitting in first place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) West division and still and holds the number one ranking in the entire OCAA.

Men's basketball Head Coach Glen Johnston said his team is in a great position at this point in the season, but admits mistakes must be cut-down in order to compete for a national title.

“I do not know how you can be better then 10-0 but in the same token we are not playing our best basketball and we're going to have to play better,” Johnston said. “You cannot be that sloppy and think you are going to win something important. It is not going to happen. We have to take care of the ball and not be so silly.”

The Falcons were in a close battle with the Lions up until the final five minutes of regulation, when Fanshawe pulled away.

Leading the Falcons were Dave Brown, 22 points and five assists, and team captain Pat Sewell who swung the momentum of the game late in the second half with an alley-oop dunk and finished with 19 points and five rebounds.

Johnston said he was impressed by the play of the team's big man, Jabari Cooper.

“Coop did a good job, he rebounded well and made some real good plays for us and kept plays alive,” Johnston said of Cooper who finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds in the contest.

“We went to him in the post area and he stuck it in the basket for us three times in a row.”

Johnson said that teams like Humber and Sheridan are the usual suspects who are going to challenge the Falcons for an OCAA title. Noting the fact that Niagara and St. Clair only have two losses apiece, Johnston said that the season is not wrapped up yet.

“Every game we play get more important,” Johnston said. “Your habits have to get better and better and I do not like what we are doing right now.”

Currently ranked third overall in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) national rankings, the Falcons put their undefeated OCAA record on the line when they traveled to Niagara to face the Knights on Friday, February 2.

The Falcons next home game is Wednesday, February 7 when the Falcons host the Mohawk Mountaineers at 8:00 p.m.
