Fanshawe Fashionista: Fall trendy doesn't mean big spendy

As students, you know that sometimes a decent meal will consist of mac n' cheese, a Fruit Roll-up and some OJ. But even in times like these, when you're waiting patiently for the bank loan to be approved or OSAP to kick in, you still want to look your best.

And who says you have to break the bank to look up to date and fashionable? I know a lot of people who spend wads of cash and still end up looking cheap — its almost as if that's what they are going for. (I've called it Paris Hilton Syndrome.) And then there are those who manage to find vintage clothing and accessories at flea markets and yard sales that look like they could have cost a small fortune.

For this season, accessorizing is key. Sometimes, less is more when it comes to adornment, but this fall accessories are everything. It's easy to pull off a whole look by simply accessorizing properly, and you don't have to break the bank to do it.

Ensuring you have a few key pieces in your wardrobe such as a denim jacket, tall boots and perhaps a neutral shirt is the best way to start. Build from a classic base, and toss in the season's flavors. If you get caught up in purchasing every fad currently out there, you will just end up with an empty wallet and a closet full of useless merchandise. That's the thing about fads; they are great at the time, and everyone has to have them, but they soon get old and outdated. The trucker hat thing was fun but short lived, and the Louis Vuitton purse craze went just a little too far. To conserve precious dollars for other pleasures, and avoid looking tacky, try to spend your money on items that are not necessarily mass-produced to be the ‘latest fad'. You will only regret it in a couple of weeks when everyone and their uncle is flooding society with their look.

So remember, spending less money doesn't necessarily make you look cheap. It all depends on what you are spending it on. Opt for fewer items that are more practical and have potential for longevity. And always try to look your best; you never who you might run into.
