Province invests in Fanshawe

Fanshawe College is cashing in thanks to the government.

The McGuinty government announced its intentions on Friday, February 2 to make increased investments in post-secondary education in hopes of providing students in London with greater access to high-quality education.

Chris Bentley, MPP for London West and Minister of Training, Colleges, and Universities said the government is committed to improving the quality of education for students.

“We've made a lot of progress on our plan to improve students access to high-quality postsecondary education and training, and these investments will enable us to make even more progress,” Bentley said.

For the first time, colleges and universities will receive stable, predictable three-year funding. The government's investment of $4 billion this year to support access and quality will rise to $4.3 billion by 2008-09, reaching $1 billion more in annual funding compared to 2004-05.

The government announced that Fanshawe would benefit from over $71 million in support this year.

Manager of Marketing and Communications, Emily Marcoccia said that the announced money had already been implemented in this year's budget.

“We had built some of the funding assumptions into our current budget, including staff positions mentioned in the announcement,” Marcoccia said. “For example, some of these positions are current student (success) advisor positions and quality (equipment) improvement projects, such as upgrades to classrooms, have also been completed.”

Marcoccia said that Fanshawe does not want to sound ungrateful to the government for their contribution, but that the recent announcement made it sound like the college was receiving ‘new money', which was not the case.

Vice President of Planning and Administrative services, Bernice Hull, said the continuous funding would help the college follow their basic vision.

“This funding supports Fanshawe's mission of student access and student success,” Hull said. “Improvements in technology and quality education woven throughout our multi-year agreement supports our vision to be ‘Community Driven…Student Focused.'”
