Facebook has officially taken over Fanshawe

A popular social networking site on the Internet is becoming part of the daily routine for many Fanshawe students.

Facebook is an online social forum that allows mostly high school or college-aged individuals to connect with friends, share photos, create groups, notify people of upcoming events and network with colleagues or people with similar interests.

Former Harvard student, Mark Zuckerberg originally created the site in 2004 so his fellow students would have a tool to network with each other. The popularity of the site took off and quickly spread to other campuses at Yale and Stanford.

When the site quickly began to take off across college and university campuses around the United States, Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard and decided to run Facebook full-time.

Although originally only available to students with a valid university or college email account, Facebook expanded in late 2006 to include individuals from geographical networks or to anyone with a valid email address.

When Fanshawe students were asked about Facebook the majority said they check their online Facebook account several times a day.

One female student said she even monitors her Facebook account while attending class in labs.

Brodie Bevan, a first-year student in the Early Childhood Education program at Fanshawe, said that she is not ‘being consumed' by Facebook, as many other students said that they were, but that many of the sites features appealed to her.

“I like being able to share pictures and being able to connect with a lot of friends,” Bevan said.

Keeping in touch with friends that she had been out of contact with was another positive aspect of Facebook, according to Bevan.

Although she said not everything about the site is positive.

“There is too much drama,” Bevan said. “There are always stupid arguments going on in wall posts and rude comments on pictures.”

‘The Wall' feature on Facebook allows individuals to post comments on a users individual Facebook page, making it public to the users friends on the site.

The ‘groups' section on the site allows Facebook users to create a specific group or section on the site revolving around a certain topic, issue, interest, or theme.

Fanshawe College has several groups on Facebook formed by students and alumni alike.

Examples of the Fanshawe College groups include; Fanshawe College Alumni, 700 members; Project Take Down Fanshawe Fence, 215 members; and Fanshawe Hotties, 78 members.

Several programs at Fanshawe also have groups for students in those particular programs.

Facebook is currently the largest college focused site on the Internet with over 17 million users globally. Facebook is also the largest photo-sharing site on the Internet, with over 2.3 million photos uploaded daily.
