The Falcons walk away with the most prolific individual award in Canadian college hoops.

Pat Sewell, a guard/forward on the Fanshawe Falcons men's basketball team was named the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Year at the CCAA basketball awards banquet held in Truro, Nova Scotia, on March 11.

Sewell said despite losing in the CCAA championships, the best memory from this past season was winning the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championship with his teammates and said his biggest personal accomplishment was winning the CCAA Player of the Year.

“I do not even have words for it, but it was a good feeling,” Sewell said in reference to him winning the national award. “It was an all around great year, everyone played well, we had a good season, and it is really nothing to be ashamed of.”

In the 10th year of handing out the award, Sewell becomes the second OCAA Athlete to be honoured as CCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Year. Shane Bascoe of Sheridan College took home the honour in 2000.

Along with the national award, Sewell was honoured with several other accolades this season including, OCAA Player of the Year, OCAA First-team All-star, OCAA Championship MVP, OCAA Athlete of the Week, and CCAA First-team All-Canadian.

Sewell averaged 30 minutes per game in the regular season, totaling 201 points for an average of 15.5 points per game. Sewell also averaged seven rebound per game, three assists per game and had a 77 per cent free throw percentage.

Sewell helped propel the Falcons to a perfect league record of 14-0, ranking them first in the OCAA throughout the season as well as a third ranking nationally.

Sewell said it is still up in the air whether or not he will be returning next year for a fourth season with the Falcons.

Over the past three years, Sewell has proven to be one of the elite players in the province. Throughout his career with the Falcons, Sewell has played in 39 games and has recorded 636 points for an average of 16.3 points per game. Since joining the team, he has led the team in scoring every year.
