Men's volleyball team looking for OCAA championship

Falcons are ready to kick-off another season on the volleyball courts; a strong bench, and experienced coaching staff will be the keys for the men's volleyball team this upcoming season. “Our goal is to win OCAAs,” said head coach Dave McMillan.

McMillan is not hesitant to state the expectations of succeeding at the Ontario College Athletic Association's Provincial championships for the squad, but said Durham College and the Mohawk Mountaineers will provide their toughest competition. McMillan also said depth and defensive quickness will be some of the teams best attributes.

“We're a lot deeper in talent compared to last year,” said McMillan. “We're still a young team but we're very quick, and very good defensively.”

The team will have five returning players including setter Bruno Urbani and libero Pawel Kucharski. McMillan will look towards these two players to provide leadership for the young Falcon squad.

First year players who will look to make significant contributions to the team this year are Ryan Corby, Ryan Haines, Rob Thorpe, and Justin Guerin. McMillan said Corby stands out as the best of the current freshman class.

Fanshawe will also get a boost on the coaching staff as Josh Westgate, a former three-year captain for Fanshawe volleyball, and Russ Miller, a former Falcon setter, join the Falcon coaching ranks.

“These two will make my job a lot easier,” said McMillan.

After the Kick-Off Tournament on the 1st and 2nd, Fanshawe will open their regular season on the road as they visit the Redeemer Royals on October 6th. The teams first regular season home game is October 19th against Mohawk.
