Celebrating social change

Although my articles usually serve to inform about problems in the world and what needs to change, I felt that this week's article needed a change in focus. It is not enough to simply point out the problems that exist in our world. It is not enough to denounce the negative actions taken by others. We must work for social change. We must acknowledge the progress being made, and the organizations and individuals contributing positively to the cause. We must also celebrate the achievements and progress in the fight for social justice.

Recently a London chapter of the ‘war resisters' has become active. The war resisters support campaign is a grass-roots movement of labor, faith, community and other organizations that collectively support American soldiers who refuse to fight in the illegal war in Iraq. Refusing to fight in this illegal war is labeled ‘desertion' by the U.S. and is a felony. The war resisters campaign supports deserters as they arrive in Canada and lobbies the federal government to grant these refuge-seekers the same asylum we offered soldiers who deserted the military during the Vietnam War. The London chapter is hosting a benefit concert at Labatt Hall in King's College on April 1 at 1 p.m. to raise much-needed funds for this campaign. To get involved with this campaign or for more details, go to resisters.ca or email londonresisters@yahoo.ca.

The FSU is promoting and organizing a 30 Hour Famine to raise funds for World Vision, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in the impoverished nations of the world. Join hundreds of other students in this fun and fulfilling experience, or at least pledge some money to a student who is fasting for this worthy cause.

There is now a Fanshawe Green Club actively fighting for our planet on campus. Email fanshawegreenclub@hotmail.com to turn your passion for the environment into action.

There is also a B.L.A.C.K. Unity Club on campus, to act as a strong voice for black students at Fanshawe, as well as work towards eradicating racism and prejudice. The Fanshawe Social Justice Club and the B.L.A.C.K. Unity Club will be co-sponsoring this week's pub, so get your tickets to support both of our clubs. There will be performers, good DJ's, and the theme is racial unity through social justice.

Remember that all revolutions are celebrations of change. Celebrate the achievements and progress being made while continuing to make a difference this week. Contributing to positive change is the most rewarding feeling in the world. So go ahead and reward yourself, you deserve it.
