Fashion Fashionista: Looking good after grad

With summer just around the corner, it means fun in the sun, day trips to the beach and lounging around the house — or not. The real world is about to come knocking on your front door and all of your hard work in the classroom is about to finally pay off. But before you jump into the rat race, it's important to be mentally and physically prepared; it's time to dress for success.

A significant part of hiring decisions is often based on non-verbal elements, such as a solid handshake, body language, eye contact, clothing selection and grooming. Never overlook the power of a great first impression. We make assumptions daily about people and how they look whether we know we are doing it or not. Employers base a lot of professional credibility and potential performance on your appearance during a first meeting. It's very difficult to overcome a poor first impression, regardless of your knowledge or expertise.

To determine what your best look will be, as all jobs are different, do some research and practice for the interview to plan what professional image you want to project. When you arrive dressed the part, you will feel more confident which will show throughout the interview. Some employers admit that your appearance says a lot about what you know about the world around you and what attention you give to detail.

Although accessories are all the rage this season, try not to overdo it. Tie in only a few key accessories as not to distract from the reason you are there, and in most cases especially this one, less is more. Depending on where you apply, visible tattoos and piercings are usually not a good idea; however you do want to stay true to yourself.

Dresses are showing up everywhere this summer, but a lot of work places require pants and close toe shoes. You can still stay your feminine-self and follow the rules of the work place. Instead of feeling free and flowing in a sweet summer dress, play with colour and let that rainbow light your way. You will still feel bubbly and noticed without disappointing your employer. Guys and girls can feel free in linen as the material is perfect for the hot season and cool wherever you go. Fabrics depict the mood of the garment, so enjoy the textile world and mix it up.

By keeping your look professional you are bound to go far in this world, keeping in mind that you can only go as far as you push. Good luck graduates!
