Spiritual guru speaks in London to packed house

The London Convention Centre was packed Tuesday, May 8 for a very special presentation by Doctor and international best selling author Deepak Chopra, who spoke about spirituality and being one with your mind.

Chopra's books often cover spirituality issues, such as the case in his book The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life, where he shares with readers the 15 secrets of spirituality.

As complex as his theories may be, Chopra was able to draw a crowd of 1,200 at the Convention Centre. Despite steep ticket prices (regular tickets were $75, while V.I.P tickets went for $125, which were all sold out), paying audience members were anxious to meet and hear Chopra speak. The presentation was entitled “An Evening with Deepak Chopra”, and was meant for audience members to simply sit back and listen to him talk about human meaning within the universe.

While talking one-on-one with Chopra was as hard as getting a private meeting with the Pope, fans of his work were much easier to track down. John Moore, who is self employed, said he heard about Chopra on the internet, and when he saw that he was coming to London he figured he should check it out.

“I'm just fascinated with the stuff, and it's part of my development to seek out different forms of information. Its part of life, the learning experience,” explained Moore.

Chopra began with a descriptive background about himself; he's from India, where he became a doctor. In 1970 he went to the United States to continue his medical work, became a doctor at New England Memorial Hospital, where he eventually became Chief of Staff. Ultimately, Chopra left the hospital to become a mind-body healer, during which time he wrote many of his books and developed various theories on the make up of the universe.

According to Chopra, he developed his theories using Hindu philosophy, but mixed it with quantum physics to explain the mysteries of the universe. Instead of seeing science and religion as going against each other, he brings them together to make great insights. As an example, Chopra told the audience that we should not hate each other, since we are all made of each other. He backed this up by saying that we are all made-up of atoms, and those atoms move around constantly and never fade, so we have atoms dating back to when Buddha and Jesus were around, and fighting yourself just doesn't make sense.

During the intermission Chopra signed books and the crowd lined up from one end of the hall to the other hoping to get his signature. It was obvious his fans truly adore him, according to Chopra; it's not just limited to one type of person. Lawyers, parole officers, wood workers and retired people were all in the audience.

Ms. Joelle, a teacher from the Waterloo Catholic Board, loves how his works bring everyone together.

“It speaks to anyone coming to this spirituality, it doesn't exclude anyone, it's very inviting,” said Joelle.

Bobbi Hoffman is an employee at the Bayley Group from Hensall, Ontario, which organized Chopra's visit to London. Hoffman was very pleased with the turnout, and said that the event was a huge success.

“We had a great response, we're overwhelmed with what went on. We had a fantastic turn out tonight, and great help from London,” said Hoffman.

Chopra finished by saying that he was thrilled to be back in London, and hopes to come back soon. Chopra has also just finished his new book, Buddha, A Story of Enlightenment, which will go on sale at the end of May.
