Get ready to shine Fanshawe

A long tradition of cleaning cars, shining shoes and performing for spare change, post-secondary students from across the country have made Shinerama the largest fundraising organization across Canada.

Since 1964, Shinerama volunteers from many colleges and universities across the nation have worked hard in order to raise money for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, assisting over 3,400 Canadian children and adults every year who suffer from one of the most common fatal diseases to date.

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system. The body produces mass amounts of mucus, which coats the internal organs of the body preventing absorption of nutrients and vitamins. The disease inhibits the body from clearing bacteria, causing organs to become inflamed and infected. In order to keep the body functioning properly, those suffering are required to take upwards of 15 pills a day.

Last year, Canadian students involved in Shinerama were able to raise $965,000. The London community alone contributed over $10,000 to Fanshawe's campaign through fundraising activities, such as car cleaning, shoe shining and performing for donations.

According to the CCFF, “Most children with cystic fibrosis did not live long enough to attend kindergarten; today half of all Canadians with CF are expected to live into their late 30s, and even beyond.”

Banking on past success, Fanshawe's goal this year is $14,500 and hopes are high for all of those who are participating. Fanshawe College is organizing three different Shinerama events during Frosh Week for the 2007/08 school year.

- September 6: The Out Back Shack will be running the Shinerama Pub. Tickets will be sold in the Biz Booth for $3 and doors open at 9 p.m.

- September 7: All new students, as well as returning Fanshawe students, are encouraged to come out to Shine-day on campus. The FSU and volunteers will be putting on a day of activities such as dunk tank, tuition prize raffle and Shinerama concert.

- Saturday, September 8: Students from Fanshawe and Western alike will be hitting the streets of London where they will be on location at major malls, and other London hot spots, participating in a car wash and other fundraisers in order to reach out to the community for their support in finding treatment and a cure for CF.

All students are welcome to attend these events and support the cause of the cure. For those who are interested in volunteering you can contact the VP of Finance, Chris Pressey of the Fanshawe Student Union in room SC 2001or by phone at 519-452-4430 ext. 228.
