President's Perspective: The boys of the FSU are here to help

The Fanshawe Student Union is about to set a new precedent for this year, a new era in the governing of schools. Forget what you know about student unions and enter the dawning of a new age, the age of sweet times and better experiences.

We are not here to organize a dance, or win any popularity contests and, yes I know not all student councils were boring and/or uncool. However in comparison we are here to make sure you have the best time of your life. Never again will you have the opportunity to be surrounded by so many people willing to learn and most of them sharing the exact same interests as you. This college is a pool of knowledge and memories. Don't let any of them pass you by.

Every part of your college experience can be enhanced by the FSU, we take pride in making sure every student is treated fairly and is taken seriously. My name is Travis Mazereeuw and I am your student union president and would like to welcome you to the 2007/2008 Fanshawe College school year.

The role of the FSU this year is to make sure you do not waste any of your precious time right from the beginning. We want you to get involved, have fun and meet some amazing people. Maybe you find it difficult to meet new people or have a hard time approaching new people. The student union is here and we love to meet everyone we can. So that means it isn't hard to meet us and we would love for you to come out to events and all the fun things we do. The student council consists of six members.

President—(that's me)
VP Entertainment—Sean Russell
VP Athletics—Jonathan Hillis
VP Finance—Chris Pressey
VP Internal—Jason Wilton
VP External and Academic Affairs — Arif Erten.

Each one of us has our own unique and important roles, all consisting of making sure the students at Fanshawe are happy and top shelf material. Each week a new Executive will write an article in this very paper. This is a chance for you to learn more about their roles and to find out what's going on in the Fanshawe Student Union. I can honestly say that this year's student council consists of the most dedicated and hard working fun people ever to work in a student council in the entire universe. All of us are easy going, approachable and love to have a good time. Now having a good time doesn't mean we aren't ready to work as hard as is needed to ensure all students are treated with respect and are treated fair right down to your final marks.

Our whole team really wants you to realize we are here to help and we listen. Any concerns or questions you have about your teachers, social events, grades, clubs, sports etc... We will find an answer, sign you up or help you appeal a grade. You will never know until you ask, so ask us to do our jobs. You might be thinking, “Hey, these guys work inside the school?” Well I've got news for you! We don't just have an effect inside the school, but also have a large effect in the surrounding community. I personally sit on the Town & Gown committee, which consists of the Mayor of London, neighborhood representatives and a police representative, just to name a few. Each and every opportunity outside the College is a chance to show how amazing Fanshawe students really are. So we try our best to do just that.

I was going to write a little bio about myself, but then I realized it doesn't really matter where I've been or how I got here. What matters right now is where you are going; and we can help you get there.
