Falcons soar with the birds

The Fanshawe badminton squad heads into action with high expectations after their break out season this past year.

With the leadership of many veteran players the Falcons were able to soar to a first overall rank in the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) and a rank of third in Canada. The Falcons had great success at both the regional and provincial championships. Fanshawe was represented at the Nationals in BC by singles champion Nathanial Allard and the women's doubles team of Jen Hayman and Jayme Sky. Although the results at Nationals were not great, it was a good learning experience for all involved.

Coach Cindy Huras was impressed with the team's effort last season and is only hoping to improve in 2007/08. Allard will be looking to capture his fourth straight OCAA men's singles title and is excited to get things back in gear.

Allard said the team looks good and he has high expectations for the year. He also mentioned that with the additions of Jordan Brooks from the Harwood Phoenix Club and Sara Fuller from the Brantford juniors, the Falcons will have no problem being a force in OCAA competition this season.

Cindy Huras brings her eighth year of coaching experience to the table along with the help of former player, and now assistant coach Matt Plachta. In tandem with Jason Drury and Laura Fuller, the coaching staff will take their team into action starting October 26 at Humber, followed by tournaments in Scarborough, Windsor, Hamilton and their own here at Fanshawe.

Try outs for the 2007/08 badminton squad start September 17.
