John McDonald for Golden Glove? It's a nice thought, but I'm thinking it's highly unlikely.

Don't get me wrong, not only is McDonald an amazing person, but the shortstop has played exceptionally well for the Toronto Blue Jays as of late. Honestly, I defy even Robbie Alomar could have made some of the plays Johnny-Mac has made this season. But at the same time, a look at the awards' recent history makes it look like they're looking for more of an all-around player than just a defensive star.

By definition the Golden Glove is awarded annually to the player that shows the most ‘superior individual fielding performance' at each position in both the American and National Leagues. Since 1993 there have only been three different Golden Glove winners in the AL at short; Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Omar Vizquel, all of whom had the offensive skills to go hand in hand with their defense. As of the time I wrote this article McDonald had a whopping .243 batting average, we're talking about a player whose offensive ability is comparable to that of Greg Zaun. Not a good omen.

But the Jays took this one step further by jumping on the McDonald bandwagon and re-signing the shortstop for two seasons. Now, don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but at this point I'd be willing to sacrifice a little bit of his defense for another shortstop who could help fill the score sheet, something the Jays need almost as badly as a solid bullpen.

Now as for an underrated Blue Jay, look no further than the man who plays next to McDonald, second baseman Aaron Hill. This season Hill broke a record set by former Blue Jay all-star Alomar for most doubles in a season with 45. The 25-year old has been steadily progressing into an important part of the team since his acquisition in 2005 and is turning into an all-around player. So perhaps it won't be too long before the Blue Jays get to see another Golden Glove at second after Orlando Hudson won it in 2005.

But as for a Glove at short? Good luck to McDonald, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
