From Edmonton with love

Canadian indie favs, Shout Out Out Out Out, will be at Call the Office on Wednesday

Shout Out Out Out Out have been making waves in the Canadian music scene since their 2006 independent release of Not Saying Just Saying on their own label, Nrmls Wlcm. The album quickly moved up to number five on the Canadian college radio charts, and SO4 (as they're commonly referred to) even received a Juno nomination for Best Alternative Album of the Year. Though they did not win, it was most certainly an impressive accomplishment for the band's debut release.

This being their last tour before hunkering down to record a sophomore album in the winter, Shout Out Out Out Out will be coming to Call the Office on Wednesday, October 24.

Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, the six members that make up Shout Out Out Out are all deeply tied into their local music scene back home. Rob Hoffard and Lyle Bell form the indie duo Whitey Houston. Nik Krozub and Jason Troockl, on the other hand, are the label heads of Nrmls Wlcm, which has not only released their band's music, but also the music of tour-mate San Serac.

Will Zimmerman, one of the band's two drummers clearly remembers his last time in the Forest City: “We played Call the Office with Holy Fuck. That was a while ago now I guess, and that show was just a trip... Not any offence to London, but we just didn't know what kind of show we were going to have or what the turnout was going to be... but it was just so much fun. [Call the Office] has that small venue, total love feel.”

Fun is an apt start to describing SO4's music; they combine an array of electronic, techno and rock influences to create “upbeat party tunes that aren't just blasé.” A culmination of several synthesizers, four bass players and two drummers, their music is exactly what you'd expect: energetic, catchy, and most certainly danceable.

Some criticize this aspect of their music, however, suggesting that the constant dance rhythms do not offer much in the way of musical variation. Shout Out contests this, saying, “A lot of folk maybe listen to techno or dance music and see it as a repetitive thing, that you have to have a four-on-the-floor beat at all times, but I think there are different things to explore there... it can be limiting to just be like 'we're a techno band', and that's why were not just a techno band.”

Nevertheless, consensus among concert reviewers seems to be that SO4 provides each of their audiences with an experience like none other; they in fact scored a 97 grade from Chart Magazine for their live performance at Canadian Music Week in 2006.

So, if the prospect of a night out dancing (and perhaps drinking) with one of Canada's most up-and-coming acts catches your attention, you should probably be at Call the Office next Wednesday.
