Time to lift the ban on steriods in MLB

Major League Baseball (MLB) is going to be blown to pieces after George Mitchell releases his report on steroids in baseball. In case you didn't know, Mitchell is a baseball investigator trying to get to the bottom of the steroid scandal. Supposedly he knows the names of those who have purchased steroids over the past twenty years. He will release his information to the public by the end of the year and it will include those names, big names.

My feeling on this is topic is, “So what?” We all know who took roids and we can all assume for how long they have been juiced up for. (I will be shocked if A-Rod's name isn't on the list). Baseball is already tainted and it was proved when fans voted to have Barry Bonds record ball branded with an asterisk. This got me wondering who is really upset with all this steroid talk?

I wonder how many people were upset back in 1998 when the famous home run race was taking place. One day Mark McGwire was in the lead, next it's Sammy Sosa, no wait Big Mac just hit two homers in one game, he's in the lead. Man that was baseball. Do not even try to tell me you didn't stay up for the 11 p.m. edition of Sports Centre to see who was in the lead. That chase for the Roger Maris homerun record brought fans back to the game. I guess now that chase might turn a lot of fans away from the game. Ironic eh?

However, I think those fans will be senior citizens. They all talk about keeping the game clean and how Bonds' record isn't the true record. How Hank Aaron and Maris did the job with out help. I would like to see them hit a homer off Jake Peavy, C.C. Sabathia or Josh Beckett. Pitchers are much faster, stronger and better these days.

I understand that many people think Bonds' record is not legit. But come on, times change. You mean to tell me that when Martin Brodeur breaks Patrick Roy's all time win record it shouldn't count? The rules have changed and there are no longer ties. How many extra wins has Marty earned due to the shootout rule? How many more wins would Roy have earned in shootouts? If you're going to change the rules, or people are breaking the rules and you're not punishing them do one simple thing, put an asterisk beside every record. Don't bitch and complain about what you think are the true records and not true records. Just stand up and make a stand. And what is the best way to do it?

If baseball is so worried about putting fans in the stands, then make steroids legal. I mean come on people, when I go to a baseball game I do not want to see a team hit singles and doubles to score runs. I want to see HOMERS. GRAND SLAMS!!!!! There are only so many God gifted talents out there. There are far too many mediocre hitters like the John Macdonald's of this world. Think about having four Bonds', A-Rod's or David Ortiz's on your team. Someone who is able to hit a home run every at bat. This would be great. Why do people go see the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox when they are in town? It's because they can hit homers and lots of them. That puts people in the stands. It might take a year or two for people to come to terms with the fact that everyone is on steroids, however when the scores are in the double digits each night, fans will be very understanding. Then the commissioner could start a new record book from 1995 and on. Would that please everyone? Including both the young generation and the senior generations.

Yes I said it, make steroids legal in all professional sports, just not the Olympics but that's worth a totally different article.

Let me know what you think. Go to the FSU website (www.fsu.on.ca/interrobang) and write what you think.
