Fashion Fashionista: Green is the next big fashion trend

The unique mystique of ECO-FASHION is beginning to turn up the heat on trendy runways, thus turning down the stress levels the world is currently facing.

Simply put, the term “eco-fashion” refers to clothing made from environmentally friendly fabrics and responsible production techniques. Therefore any material that takes into account the environment and the health of YOU the consumer, as well as the working conditions of employees of the fashion industry. This revolutionary idea has been around for ages, but over the past few years making its way more prevalent in department stores, and eventually all the way to your closet.

For years, designers have been playing around with environmentally friendly fabrics, but it wasn't until 2005 in NYC when this trend made its debut at NYC Fashion Week. Joining forces with upscale retailer Barneys, a non-profit organization called Earth Pledge launched the line ‘Future Fashion.'

The criteria for an “environmentally friendly garment” usually consist of organically raw materials such as pesticide-free cotton, hemp, bamboo or recycled materials like the plastic from old soda bottles or polyester. BRILLIANT!

As we evolved and took many steps forward in the industrial revolution, we took so many steps in the wrong direction for Mother Nature. Now, more than ever, we must aid this struggling world by supporting the environment any way possible. This clothing option not only makes a fashion statement, but also the right statement.

Along with looking out for the well being of the planet, eco fashions are made by employees making fair wages in healthy working conditions and eliminate the use of harmful chemicals and bleaches to colour fabrics.

One pioneer of the emerging eco-fashion movement is designer Linda Loudermilk with a luxury eco-line of clothing and accessories that uses exotic plants, sea cells and soya to create beautiful garments.

“We aim to give glamour legs, a fabulous look and a slammin' attitude that stops traffic and shouts the message: Eco can be edgy, loud, fun, playful, feminine and hyper-cool,” Loudermilk explained.

More and more, top designers are going green and turning eco-friendly fabrics into Haut Couture. The message is simple: we have one planet and one chance to preserve it for our children and our children's children. Reduce, reuse and recycle, the 3 R's. It seems easy enough, so why not make a conscious effort to make a difference and go green. A colour that symbolizes global vitality that will never go out of style.
