Team shines with high hopes of medal standings

The Fanshawe Falcons badminton team is flying high after cleaning house during their past tournament.

The Falcons walked away with medals in almost every category. In total, the team brought home three gold medals in women's singles, men's doubles, mixed doubles and two silvers for men's singles and women's doubles. There was no team scoring, however if there was many people believe Fanshawe would have been the easy winners.

Star player Nathanial Allard, credits the team success to a deep bench.

“We have five strong guys and girls that can go out and win. Last year we didn't have that many,” Allard said.

Allard added that this team is more of a team this year compared to last year.

“We have a team connection that is different to last year. There is more chemistry and training with this year's team,” he said.

That team chemistry will be key if the Falcons look to win provincial titles again. They are the defending OCAA women's double champs and overall team champions.

On a personal goal, Allard is looking to do something this year that no other player has ever done in OCAA history. He is the three-time defending OCAA single champion. Only three other players have done this before. No male or female has ever won four championships in a row.

The season may be earlier, and Allard admits he hasn't started thinking about the title however he has been working out more.

“I'm trying to tone more muscle and work out more as well as hitting the weights more,” he said.

If Allard does win the singles title this year, he will be in a class of his own and will be considered the all time best badminton player in Ontario.

If you would like to see the Falcons in action, they are hosting the annual Fanshawe Invitational on Friday, November 23. If you do show up to watch, you will be in for a special treat, as every player who wears the red and black has a chance at wearing a medal at the end of the tournament. Also don't be surprised to see Fanshawe ranked number one when the OCAA finally announces their standings.

As of November 15, 2007 there have been no league standings released on the OCAA website.
