Traditionally, men and women used purses to carry their perfume.

Do the terms “hobo,” “tote,” “clutch” or “satchel” ring a bell?

Almost every woman loves a stylish looking purse, and the choices on the shelves of today's department stores and boutiques are so big and beautiful, the term ‘bag lady' can be a compliment. Today's handbag trends can carry almost anything you want, from your school work, to clothing for the night/ next day and even dogs. Not only are they stylish, but these purses and bags have made our lives a lot easier. Bags are a major statement of our personality and with all the millions of designs out there, you can have a wide range of choices.

One place I recommend to shop for a handbag is Guess, especially right now, because of the new styles they are offering for the holiday season. The store, which used to be known for jeans, have expanded tremendously and are now known for their amazing purses. Most do come with a higher-than-most price tag, but remember you are paying for quality and style. Most Guess bags come in three sizes. The bigger the purse, the more expensive it will cost. Guess and Aldo Accessories have the best ‘bar' purses, which is a smaller-style purse that fits in your hand. They are just big enough to keep a lipstick, cell phone and money in.

Most stores offer a variety of size, shapes and colours, so the best thing to do is shop around. I recently was in the store Melanie Lyne (Masonville Place) and they had really nice unique purses. Although shopping for that special handbag is a known addiction for many women, I should add that they are also a great gift for any girl.

When shopping for a purse, make sure the bag closes properly. I personally don't like a purse that doesn't have a zipper or big flap, not only do I not want people to see everything I carry with me, but I also don't want the entire contents to spill out every time I set it down. I also recommend buying a purse that has lots of pockets inside to keep everything organized.

Also with winter coming up make sure the strap can fit comfortably over your jacket. When looking at a purse you are about to purchase, checkout all the seams and the buttons to make sure it isn't already scuffed or damaged.

Safety tip: Before walking out to your car ladies, have your keys already out, instead of fumbling around in the bottom of your purse big purse in the parking lot.
