P.S. This movie isn't all that bad

This book turned movie plot has a lot more to offer than most chick flicks. P.S I Love You is filled with laughter, tears and a lot of heart, which makes it stand out and worthy of watching.

Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank) is in a passionate and romantic marriage with Gerry (Gerard Butler), an Irish man she met in college and married too young (or so says her mother).

Even though they fight constantly, they are blissfully happy. That is until Gerry unexpectedly dies from a brain tumor. Holly soon becomes extremely distraught and secludes herself in her apartment. She had found and lost her true love. The couple had made plans to start a family and grow old together, and now she just keeps asking herself what she did wrong to deserve this happening to her. Unable to face working, Holly fills her days with sappy music and movies, wearing Gerry's old clothes, and talking to her late husband as if he were there.

Things start to change on her 30th birthday when a cake arrives from Gerry with a tape recorder inside. Upon listening to the tape, she learns that before Gerry passed away he wrote her letters that would be delivered randomly throughout the year and that Holly must do whatever they tell her to. A spark is ignited inside her and Holly feels hope once more because she can hold onto Gerry for just a little bit longer.

While the idea of getting letters from a dead husband is a little cryptic, they end up being the best gift he could have given her. The following months offer many challenges for Holly, but with the help of her two best friends, Denise and Sharon, her mother, her new friend Daniel, and of course Gerry, there is hope that Holly can finally let Gerry go and be happy with her life.

I loved this movie. I went into this movie expecting a classic chick flick, an enjoyable movie but not a lot of depth or variety, but I came out completely surprised. I laughed and cried numerous times, and sometimes within minutes of one another. The plot was full of surprises, which took the audience on an emotional rollercoaster.

Hilary Swank (The Reaping) was awesome. She often plays the strong, held together character, but in the movie she was a nut case and it worked. Gerard Butler (300) was such a good choice for this role because he has a presence that stands out no matter how small a role he is in. Plus it doesn't hurt that he is nice to look at and has an Irish accent. Lisa Kudrow, Harry Connick Jr. and Kathy Bates added depth to their supporting characters.

This movie is based on a book called P.S I Love You by Cecelia Ahern. The main plotline is the same between the book and the movie, but it plays out a little differently. I really enjoyed the book and think it is worth reading for those interested. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes chick flicks and wants to feel a lot of emotion during a movie.

Final Words: Saw it. Loved it. Can't wait to go to Ireland.
