Fanshawe Fashionista: Dirty little secrets

Behind every beautiful woman, and every handsome man, lie secrets that keep one looking, sounding and feeling fabulous.

We all have them, little tricks of the trade that glorify and enhance what nature naturally gave us. The fashion industry is flooded with fictitious images and portrayals of models and designers who have many tricks up their designer sleeves. And along the way, I'm sure most of you have come across great ways to hide imperfections or flaunt fab features. Read on to discover how easy and affordable it is to fool even your toughest critic — yourself — and gain a whole new level of confidence.

Most ladies know and love the push up bra. That said, it's important to find one that works best for you. After working in a lingerie store for over three years, I learned a few tricks myself. Try on a padded bra that is one cup-size smaller than your everyday bras. I find that this emphasizes the area and fits better. It's a given that everyone's body shape is very different, so if this doesn't work for you, try on different sizes until you find a perfect fit. Keep in mind that you don't want to be ‘spilling' out; it will look like you have four boobs under clothing instead of two instead of just comfortably lifting for extra, um…attention.

The next rule of thumb is never wear white shades of clothing that are a lot whiter than your teeth, because it only makes your pearly whites look dull compared to your ensemble. And to make you're smile burst, wear a bright shade of lipstick such as cherry red, but make sure that it matches your skin tone. Red lips not only say, “Kiss me now!” but they make teeth seem shades whiter than they really are, without pricey bleaching kits.

Now, if you're trying to slim down, and disguise the weight you put on from the Thanksgiving holiday, dark colours, especially black are the way to go. It's true, that wearing black can make you look significantly slimmer, so eat your heart out and enjoy the holidays to come without looking like you stuffed your face all weekend long. Also keep in mind the oldest, but one of the best tricks in the book. Wearing stripes can help to either elongate your figure or widen it. If you want to look tall and slender, opt for vertical stripes, where as horizontal stripes will make you look wider. Depending of your body type, these small tricks will give the illusion that works best for you.

It's not a bad thing to disguise certain attributes about yourself if you are self-conscious about them. Nor is it wrong to flaunt what the good Lord gave you. Simply keep some of these pointers in mind, and in no time you'll be a fearless, flawless and fabulous!
