Ruth's roomies not typical tenants

Letter to the editor
Re: Ruth Swanson

I was sifting through a few newspapers and magazines looking for an article that would catch my eye and make me read it. I found a few articles that were good, but in the Interrobang I noticed a really bold statement in a headline that made me want to lash out at the author. The title simply stated: “Boy roomies suck at being clean”, and was written by Ruth Swanson. I was curious and appalled by this headline because immediately I knew it was an incredibly biased thing to say about males from a female standpoint. I chose it for my review because it stirred me up inside and switched my brain into overdrive.

I liked the style the author wrote the piece in; and the way she clearly listed her old roommates. I also liked the flow and historical perspectives she had throughout her story. What I did not enjoy about this particular article was the way she centered out all males on behalf of four prior male roommates. Her research was in depth- stating reasons for her not to enjoy rooming with each guy - but her attitude in this paper shows nothing but regret and impossibility when living with guys. She focused on the downfalls of each male roommate and showed little or no appeasement toward them. When a female roommate is mentioned; nothing but joy and wonder is stated - no faults or bad moments.

This author didn't look into one important factor; she did not know how the persons grew up. The way a person lives with other people is determined by how they lived at home with their parents. If someone always has his or her mommy and daddy cleaning up after him or her; then when they move out they know nothing other than “someone will clean it up, so I don't have to.” It sounds to me as if she has problems relating to guys because she seems only happy with girls. Her four male roommates may have been that way out of habit, and habits can be altered or completely changed. Her research was very inadequate.
