Bronze all-around for Falcon basketball

Fanshawe players named All-Stars at Provincial level

Both the men's and women's basketball teams brought home medals from this year's provincial championships.

The teams both won OCAA bronze at the championships, which ran between February 28 and March 1 at Niagara College for the women and Mohawk for the men.

“The semi-final game versus Seneca we knew would be really tough,” said Joanne Verbeek, the women's basketball coordinator. “We knew that if we beat them that would have been the underdogs coming to beat the top team. But we lost and ended up in the bronze medal game.

“It's hard to get up for a bronze medal game knowing you're not going to be in a gold medal game but the girls did really well, and it wasn't a close game, we beat them handily.”

The women's team won their game 63-44 with the Falcons' Tiffany Wilbur and Alison Griffiths leading the way with 14 and 13 points respectively, and Penny Ackersviller, who had 8 points, was named the teams' player of the game.

The men's game versus St. Lawrence Kingston Vikings was much closer as the team won on a 70-64 final score, but the win was good enough to get Fanshawe's Mike King named to the championship all-star team.

“Ours was close for a bit, but we ran away with it in the second half,” said Ernie Durocher, the men's basketball coordinator. “You just never know how a team's going to show up. But they came out and played hard and got a deserving win.

“This year we lost four of the five starters so we knew it was sort of a rebuilding year and that we had an outside chance, but bronze is not bad.”

But medals weren't the only things the teams brought back with them, there were plenty of accolades to go around.

At the awards ceremony that pre-empted the tournament a trio of players from the women's team won spots on the second-team West all-star squad. Ackersviller, Chelsea Brown, and Jessica Finlay, who were also the team's three-way captains, accepted the honour at the women's tournament banquet. The men's side was also well represented as Andy Campbell was named to the West first all-star team as well as winning West rookie of the year honours.
