Rewind has its moments

Be Kind Rewind

Quirky, describes this movie to a tee. Be Kind Rewind is unusually funny and has a definite magnetic pull.

Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) owns the small movie rental store, appropriately named Be Kind Rewind, which only carries VHS tapes. When he has to go out of town, he leaves his store under the supervision of Mike (Mos Def) his only employee. There is only one rule: do not let Jerry (Jack Black) into the store, because he is a walking disaster.

Jerry works at the local junkyard next to a power plant. After concluding that his headaches are from living next to the power plant, he decides to sabotage the plant one night, with Mike's help. The two go to the power plant after it gets dark, dressed in camouflage and ready to do some damage. Mike changes his mind about the whole thing, goes home, leaving Jerry there alone. Jerry somehow manages to get magnetized, setting in place the tragic events to follow.

Defying Mr. Fletchers orders, Jerry enters the store and frantically starts changing the order of the movies. Due to his magnetism, he unintentionally erases every tape in the store, save one. When the store's most loyal customer, Miss Falewicz (Mia Farrow) comes in and demands a movie or she will tell Mr. Fletcher that something is wrong, Mike and Jerry take drastic measures. They decide to film a version of Ghostbusters themselves, hoping that since she has never seen it and is elderly, she won't notice the difference, even though their version is only 20 minutes long. Their movie is a hit, and they start taking requests of other movies to remake. Can they fool everyone long enough to keep the store afloat until Mr. Fletcher comes back, or will they get caught?

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Jack Black (Nacho Libre) and Mos Def (16 Blocks) make a great team together. They played off of each other, making every scene comfortable and funny. Danny Glover (Shooter) and Mia Farrow (Arthur and The Invisibles) were excellent in the supporting roles. Both have had very long, successfull careers, and I am happy that they are still acting.

For me, I loved watching them act out classic scenes from some of my favourite movies, including Ghostbusters, Robocop and the Lion King. While some parts of the movie were unrealistic, it was okay because the movie wasn't trying to be believable, it was trying to be funny. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes a quirky comedy.

Final Words: Saw it. Liked it. “It's Sweded!”
