Learn and travel to Japan

A month-long cultural exchange to Japan will provide two Fanshawe students with a unique opportunity to both learn and teach.

“The exchange to Ibaraki is actually a relationship we established some time ago,” said Kim Rowe, Fanshawe's international student advisor. “They have students that come to us and enjoy and education at Fanshawe and they've really been trying to encourage us to start sending students there.”

Ibaraki Christian University is located in the town of Ibaraki on Japan's Pacific coast, only 120 kilometers from Tokyo, and is known for its courses on education and social welfare.

The month-long exchange marks the third time the college has been able to send a pair of students over to Ibaraki as part of the cultural exchange where the students will help to teach English and simultaneously learn about the Japanese culture.

“It's really cultural exposure for the month,” Rowe explained. “They will teach some English, learn some Japanese and get that exposure as well as take a few day trips. Next year though we hope to make it longer, six-to-eight weeks, so the students can get a general education credit while they're there.”

The exchange, which takes place from May 7 through June 4, is open to all second and third-year Fanshawe students who are interested in applying. Applicants are required to be Canadian citizens with a valid passport, have a minimum ‘B' average and speak English as a first language.

The application process includes writing a 1,000-1,500-word paper before undergoing a one-on-one interview.

The college pays for airfare, but the student is responsible for covering the homestay, meal, commuting and activity fees- which should amount to around $1,500.
