It's time to get over it

Words of advice to get you through the exam season and life in general

Getting over a failed business or life-related problems can every so often be tough. Unfortunately there is no set rule or “shortcut” to avoiding problems. We all face problems daily; however how we approach them is key to attaining success.

At times there is little or nothing we can do in certain circumstances, however allowing ourselves to be victims of said circumstances surely guarantees failure. No matter how bad it may seem you can pull yourself out of any problem by: involving others, learning from people who have passed through the same predicament, staying positive, taking the time out to relax and reflect on issues, and yes being accountable for your actions, even when it means admitting you are wrong!

Below are some valuable tips on how to get over it.

“Bad” stress kills
I'm in the film business and this often requires working long hours with different groups of people. I have learned that being able to manage your stress levels and emotions is essential to overcoming any issues that may arise or have arisen!

Furthermore, there are tons of health problems attributed to stress; unfortunately, so many of us invest so much time and energy worrying about various things we sometimes have little or no control over. Firstly, you need to know that stress kills, literally. Secondly, you need to make it a point today to channel all your energy into focusing on yourself. Begin by managing your time efficiently (i.e. distinguish between important and urgent jobs). Important jobs contribute to your overall goal, whilst urgent jobs require immediate attention. Then gradually begin to identify those areas in your life, for instance your relationships, finances, career, and body, which are causing your stress and purge the source(s).

Take a vacation
Sadly, many employers and even workers do not see the value in taking a vacation. You worry that it might influence your chances of getting a promotion or that the work will not get done once you are away, or perhaps it is too expensive? Well, being hospitalized for exhaustion, insomnia and heart disease is much more expensive, to say the least! Take the time to relax and reflect; it often provides a clearer, healthier and newer perspective.

Quit whining
I recently worked on set with a new director, and must say it was quite the experience. An experience in terms of the fact that he consistently condemned his own work in front of the talent. Being a two day shoot, this was somewhat understandable...to an extent, due to the short deadline we had to meet. However people don't like complainers. His attitude ended up impairing the work as well as its success.

The lesson here is, “in every problem you find yourself; see it as an opportunity to shine.” When you focus on a problem, without any concrete solutions, it limits your ability to succeed. Thus approach all difficulties with humour, make positive statements! You may not be able to change every situation, but you can often find victory by remaining logical, calm, clear and optimistic!

Network, network, then do some more networking
I cannot begin to emphasize the power of NETWORKING. Personally, whether job or life-related, I have been able to overcome many difficulties by simply involving others. The truth is, we all network consistently, everyday, without even knowing it. Hence start using this great skill to your advantage! Below are some quick points to stress its importance:

- Networking makes other people aware of your situation or problem.

- It increases your understanding, in terms of the best ways to approach difficulties. By speaking to other people you can learn how they solved their own problems

- Believe it or not, there are many people willing and ready to help. All you have to do is ask. Thus, how you integrate your contacts into finding a solution will significantly determine your success.

One of the most effective ways to approach networking is to think of what you can offer someone else, not what they can offer you. If you give to others unconditionally, you will receive the same treatment as well as help in return!

I am great, I am strong, I am wonderful
Someone famous once said “Learn to say ‘I don't know.' If used when appropriate, it will be often.”

Sometimes, both in business and life, we are too proud to admit that we simply do not know. You think that you have all the answers, pretend to have every solution to every problem. Please, lose the ego!!! And give others a chance to help!

Learn to apologize
Often people you apologize to such as: clients, customers, staff, friends and family are more likely to want to reconcile and rebuild the relationship - if you offer a genuine apology and take full responsibilities for your actions. Depending on whatever situation you may find yourself, apologizing as well as taking the blame solves problems. Hence, don't be afraid to say you are sorry. A simple apology goes a long way.

A stitch in time saves nine
When a problem presents itself, don't procrastinate! Or assume you will handle it later. At times an immediate action involving your urgent attention could arrest the situation quickly. Other times you may need to seek advice or help in overcoming the situation/problem. Nonetheless be aware of the situation, including potential risks that can or have developed, as this will present you with the insight to form solutions.

Lastly...
The good news is that you are not the first person to pass through a difficult situation, actually any situation. The other good news is that you are not alone. Take advantage of the above tips! Stay positive... and remember —next time you hit a snag don't let yourself unraveled!
