It's all in good fun... when not wearing pants

It was a beautiful day in June when Rachel Oakes (VP External) and I looked at each other and said “I'm never wearing pants again. This is a competition.”

Since that day, we'll wear tights, shorts, capris, shorts, anything as long as it doesn't reach the ankle. We're at the point now that when we're getting dressed to go anywhere, we don't even look at the pile of pants that have been ignored for the past four months. From then on, everything has become a competition. Who can get ready fastest, who can text quickest, and absolutely everything has turned into a friendly competition without us even realizing it.

We got to thinking, and even though it's all 100 per cent friendly and there never actually is a winner or any prizes for winning each of these mini competitions, why the heck do we turn everything into a competition?

As VP Athletics, a lot of things I'm involved in are based on competition. Varsity athletes know what I'm talking about. They're going through tryouts now and everything they do in their tryouts can determine if they make the team or not. We have teams that compete at provincial and even national levels and obtain medals at these levels, and that does not come without a huge amount of intense competition. Intramural athletes sign up for their sports to kill time between classes and have a good time while working up a sweat, but once you get out there, there's always people out there who chirp the other team and I've seen some games get pretty intense.

There is competition everywhere, even when we don't notice it. People compete with people secretly to get higher grades then the brainers in their class, they beat people off the line while stopped at a red light, absolutely everyone is subject to competition, and it's probably one of the most motivating things ever.

It's not even all about winning or losing, it's the fact that you're willing to compete, get out there and show people what you've got. Even if it's as simple as not wearing pants for months, it's the fact that Rachel won't put on pants that keeps me pantless.

Personally, I think there is no better way to show people what you've got then in friendly competition. Try out for a team, sign up for intramurals, study that extra 20 minutes for a test, go four months without pants. Whatever it is, get out there, compete, and at the end of the day, it's the fact that you did it in the first place that matters.
