A unique sense of style means getting creative

There is a new fashion accessory adorning the tops of trendsetters that's a blast from fashion's past. It's not quite a head band, and certainly not a head scarf but a head wrap. These adorably retro yet chic accessories, reminiscent of the 1960's, are making a bold revival. Though the trend became quite popular this past summer, complimenting maxi dresses and oversized sunglasses, we're still seeing it carried into the fall season with just as much style.

The great thing about head wraps is they are worn on top of the hair instead of combing it back; so they look best on messy, relaxed hair. With that being said, this cool accessory is a great way to mask any case of pillow perm. They can be pushed down to sit on your forehead. I've also seen them worn both under and over bangs. The beauty of the head wrap is you can experiment with them and wear it the way that best suits you. Get wrapped up in this trend-right accessory for fall and wear it all year round.

These skinny head wraps are made from just about anything from ribbon and feathers to braided leather and coloured elastic to strips of suede. Sure you could go to some fashion forward boutique and scoop up a pretty hand embellished one for $30, but why spend the money when they're so easy to make? Maybe you're not a crafty person, but it doesn't take much to make one of these must-have accessories. All you need is a little creativity and some fun materials.

Here are a few easy ways to create your own head wrap, on a student's budget. First, buy 90” of faux leather on a spool from a craft or fabric store. Cut the faux leather into three even strips and braid them, twist them or just knot them together every few inches. Using one shade of leather will give it a crisp look, but if you're after a statement making piece, weave in some nine mm ribbon in a rich burgundy colour. Next, string beads onto the end, glue vintage earrings on the side or add feathers for embellishment. Try different things, let your imagination take over!

This accessory is very versatile and it can be worn many different ways; double it up around your head and wear it bohemian style, tie it around your waist as a belt, or knot it around your neck as a necklace. Voila, there you have your own hair accessory to give any outfit a retro edge, and that's a wrap.
