Women scrape by with ugly win

It wasn't pretty, but the Falcon women will take it.

The Fanshawe Falcon women's basketball team defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers 58-51 on October 26. Despite the win, the Falcons did not perform very well and were lucky to squeak out the victory.

“You never want to have to walk into a dressing room and yell at your kids at the end of a game, especially after they've gotten a win under their belts, but the kids did not play the way they should,” said head coach Lori MacKay.

Turnovers, mental breakdowns, and careless fouls were rampant throughout the contest. Mackay agreed that the officiating appeared sub-par.

“You never want to blame anything outside your own team, but the officiating was not as strong as it has been in the past,” MacKay said.

First year forward Kristin Breen led the Falcons with 18 points and nine rebounds. Breen displayed flashes of brilliance throughout the contest, but MacKay said consistency is something the young forward must still work on.

“She is hot and cold,” said MacKay. “That is one thing that we're going to build on with her for the season, that is she has got to become much more of a consistent player. I told her that she could become one of the top post players in the OCAA this year.”

Other notable performances for the Falcons were Jessica Finlay scoring 11 points and collecting eight rebounds, and Katharine Ford notching 12 points and four assists.

The Falcon women will take to the court next on Friday October 28 when they take on St. Basil Secondary School, and the following afternoon they do battle against the Algoma Thunderbirds.
