It's time to make room on your shoe rack for the latest footwear trend adorning the feet of the industry's most fashionable.

Cage shoes are the newest must have item. They're a close relative of last spring's trendy gladiators with a mix of sexy sophistication and a touch of bondage. To paint an accurate picture of these ingenious shoes in your mind, imagine a slightly taller ankle bootie mixed with a finely fitted mesh sandal.

Models moseyed down the Spring 2009 catwalks of Givenchy and Stella McCartney (among others) in these retro meets futuristic foot fashions, taking the industry by storm. However, Yves Saint Laurent designer, Stefano Pilati's rendition seems to have made the largest impact of them all, topping numerous style editors ‘must have' lists for Spring.

Pilati took the look of his design to the next level by creating a version of the cage shoe featuring a wire-framed heel. This desirable shoe alone added dramatic impact to the overall collection. Style.com's fashion journalist Sarah Mower proclaims;

“Latticework grids of leather with metal-mesh heels—were enough to score a huge hit. First, they were walkable; second, they represent a coolly modern collision of the airiness of multi-strapped gladiators with the look of a boot. In a season when so much footwear has limped off runways to muttered protests from female audiences, that point alone puts YSL in the lead.”

Jeffrey Campbell got the look just right with his version titled Lattice Heel, $128, without the frilly price tag. The Lattice heel is comprised of ultra soft leather, featuring a peep-toe and finished with all over cut-outs and a buckled ankle strap. For those readers with a fearless approach to fashion, they are also available in red and fuschia.

I know it's hard to think about exposing your feet while we're still knee high in snow (sigh). So kick off those winter blues with an innovative pair of heels. Day or night, tights or bare legs, they'll surely amp up the glam factor of any ensemble! After all, what girl can honestly resist a new pair of shoes?
