Fanshawe staff maintains a perfectly harmonious balance of the sexes

The heart's desire of every student in Ontario is to enter the hallowed portals of Fanshawe College for higher education. No wonder, then, that there are 15,000 full-time students and around 35,000 part-time students registered. Is it the just the buildings, which are architectural delights on the campus, that attract the students, or is it the infrastructure that beckons the students from far and wide? From personal experience I would say it is the people manning various spheres of teaching and administration, whose all-pervading cumulative aura of goodness imbues the campus of Fanshawe College with a magical, alluring charm.

Another miracle at work behind its popularity, as I see it, is the ideal of democracy and gender equality that is observed here. Of all the gifts that God has bestowed on man, none is as precious as the woman and yet, through the ages woman's “inferiority” has been the theme song of man's life. For centuries, he has duped her into believing that he is her divinely appointed protector and so her life should revolve around the fulfillment of his wishes.

However, there is an established equal society of the genders on the Fanshawe College campus and there is equal opportunity for all. All power, whether teaching or administrative, is vested in members of the staff community as a whole, with no gender prejudice. This brings about an emotional integration which is rich in promise and potentiality. There is a saying in my country, “Where women are treated equal to men there resides health, wealth, happiness and prosperity.”

On the campus men and women work in tandem. Power is divided equally among them. Giving details, the Manager of Institutional Research and Planning, Donna Derer said, “The ratio of males to females in all levels of management is 50:50. The position of President of the College is held by a man and down the hierarchy there is one male Vice President and three female Vice Presidents.” She adds, “At the Dean level there is one female and five male deans while at the Director level the ratio swings in favour of females with four females and two male Directors.”

Looking at the number of the front line managers in the College shows 15 female and 14 male managers. Overall, there are 23 females and 23 males holding management positions from front line managers up to the President. Further down the hierarchy, overall staffing information compiled in 2003 shows that nine per cent more females are employed than males at Fanshawe College.

The Student Union Council, again, depicts equality of the sexes. The President is a woman but among the five Vice Presidents two are women and three are men.

I am impressed!!! Usually there is a wide gap between practice and precept but at Fanshawe we practice what we preach! Long live equality at Fanshawe!
