Fanshawe Fashionista: Attack of the clones

Although I did see a lot of colourful and creative costume ideas this Halloween circulating the London downtown core, by far the funniest getup in the city this year was the ‘Western girl' costume. Four brave and cleaver buddies teamed up and hit the streets of downtown London decked out in jogging pants, Uggs (of course), a messy wig, over sized sunglasses and too many tacky accessories. These men dared to face the London fashionista clan.

Overall the reaction was priceless — I just wish I thought of that. And if I had, would I actually have the nerve to mock a large population of the city I call home? Doubtful, since some of ‘those' girls are my friends and are really nice, smart people, but I can't help but get a kick out of the fact that a London stereotype was actually turned into a Halloween costume. I think it's due to lack of creativity; not on the part of the trick-or-treaters, but of the mass population who think that having a lot of money and throwing together a sloppy look is fashionable.

It's hard to claim that you've never attempted the Mary Kate and Ashley look, but like anything good, try to do it in moderation. The over saturation of this look not only became a London (mostly Western) stereotype, but as the Halloween costumes proved, it is an ongoing joke in the city.

Olsen Twins

It would appear that a lot of London lost it's creative edge when every girl and her Chihuahua started dressing the same, walking the same and talking on their cells the same. It was almost like a Paris Hilton epidemic this close to home.

For all of you who managed to escape this contagious fad and chose to be original, yet still stylish, good for you! It's the girl who often goes against the grain, no matter what her particular look and style may be, that gets noticed.
