Make room in your closet for a romper

The childish one piece is making a more mature comeback

This season, the fashion world has been presented with an alternative to sundresses and shorts. It's a piece that probably hasn't graced your wardrobe since your preschooler days, but is undeniably practical and stylish. The romper (a.k.a one-piece) has made a transformation from its former ‘onesie' title and purpose of clothing babies, to a sexy and playful trend, women are craving to own this summer.

Some of my favourite designer label rompers came in the form of safari style by Derek Lam, playful stripes courtesy of Betsey Johnson and soft and ladylike draping from the BCBG runway. Each designer's take on the trend varied in lengths, long sleeves to strapless, fitted to baggy, button-down, halter and boat-neck. The possibilities are a tad overwhelming.

The beauty of the romper is its simplicity and comfort. During the coming warmer months, layering and putting a lot of effort into one's outfit can take a back seat for most. Throw one of these on with a waist cinching belt, and a cardigan (for cooler days) and voila, a quick and effortless outfit that'll have you looking fashion forward in a pinch. What's more, a one-piece can be worn as smart bathing suit cover-up for a day at the beach or worn with tights for a fall transitional piece.

When shopping for your romper, search for lightweight fabrics such as linen, silk and cotton with a loose fit. If you're not big on the baggy look then add a belt to accentuate your waist and the rest of the fabric will drape like a dream.

On the accessory front, lots of pieces will work. Personally, when I think of the romper style I imagine its popularity amongst the hippy generation. Bohemian styled earrings, head wraps, oversized bags and strappy sandals make great daytime frills for your romper. To transform your one-piece from daytime to evening, opt for a satin romper with or without straps. Match some chunky jewellery, fierce pumps and an envelope clutch for an elegant going-out look.

Other footwear options to complete your overall look include; gladiators, peep toe heels, ked-style sneakers or flats and chunky wedges.

Who would have thought that an outfit inspired by Oshkosh clad children would make such a fashionable comeback? I suppose it's that perfect mix of playful style and practicality that have us yearning for our childhood getups. This summer, will you rock the romper?
