Students' safety a priority with hard hat donation

The London Home Builder's Association donated 105 hard hats to Fanshawe's construction carpentry techniques' first year students last Tuesday to start the new school year on a safe note.

This is the third year that the LHBA donated hard hats to the program. They solicit their members for donations in order to purchase the hats.

The donation is able to help students on two levels.

“Not only does it help reduce the students' costs, but it also promotes construction safety,” said Dan Douglas, chair of the School of Building Technology.

It's also a way for LHBA to reach out to students interested in the industry.

“One of the strategic priorities (of LHBA) is promoting careers in construction as a viable choice,” said Tatyana Irodenko, program coordinator for LHBA.

There are around 100 students currently enrolled in their first year of the program and the majority received their hats in class.

Carl DiNardo, president of LHBA, was on hand to offer some words of encouragement to the new class.

“There are always opportunities in construction,” he said. “It's a very exciting industry. It's folks like you who really build this country in the end.”

The donation is a part of the LHBA's “Protecting Our Future” program. They also offer an Award of Merit to a Fanshawe student graduating from the construction carpentry techniques program. Visit http://www.lhba.on.ca, and click under “Community Service & Programs” for more information.
