London Curling Club: A new type of rock and roll

So curling may not be the number one extreme winter sport you're thinking about testing out this upcoming season.

But you know it'll be all over your TV once the Olympics hit next year and truthfully, it has quite a following — so why not get a head start and try it out?

You're also less likely to end up in a body cast with curling than say, attempting another Olympic sport like skeleton, which would just cut your season short anyway.

As a bonus, the London Curling Club — which has been the go-to place for curling since 1847 — is looking to bring in some more students during their open house on September 15 and 16.

“We would like to introduce the sport to young people,” said Doug Petch, manager. “It's a great sport for socializing, you get to meet a lot of people, get some activity.”

The club has leagues for every skill set — from advanced, to learn-to-curl, to groups for elementary school students. So if you're already an ace at throwing rocks, you can find a league to keep your skills on target, or if you're a beginner, you can get some pointers.

Plus, they've got a cash bar. So as you're trying something new — you can commiserate over how awesome — or awful — you are with your friends.

The club is open seven days a week, with the daytime usually occupied by an older crowd while the evening brings in a “good mix” of people, said Petch.

On Saturdays, curlers can rent out sheets of ice but the club asks that there be at least two experienced curlers among those groups who are renting.

The London Curling Club offers a $180 student rate for membership for full-time post-secondary students for the year which gives you access to curling times — whatever fits your schedule — and to clinics taught by LCC qualified instructors.
