20 Questions

Janet Pole is a 2nd year Hotel Management Student on sick leave and an Interrobang columnist.

1. What is something about you that most people don't know?
I got pregnant in the bathroom of a Soviet nuclear arms plant and have a PhD from Columbia University.

2. If you were on a deserted island and could only bring one item or person with you, what would it be?
Since I doubt a fully stocked Four Seasons Hotel would count, I would take a well-trained concierge: only they would have the resources to get me off that damn island.

3. What is your greatest indulgence?
I spend WAY too much money on books; I read 300 last year.

4. What was your favorite television show growing up?
Little House on the Prairie and Jeopardy.

5. Who is your favorite band/group/musician?
Brad Paisley: put all the mud you want on my tires, baby!

6. What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Never give in to someone's demands as they think you will be giving up —- my mother said that the day before her 50th wedding anniversary in regards to my father's inability to be on time.

7. Who is your role model?
Dan Brown — anyone who could write Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code is someone whose brain I want to pick over lunch someday.

8. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose to live?
Ireland — it's green, it's rainy and oh, those accents and red-haired men! (We have to work on the getting the beer cold, though!)

9. What was your first job?
Delivering the Sarnia Observer- 40 customers over a 3 mile route up and down long driveways. Best shape I have ever been in as most of my ass and thighs were frost-bitten off.

10. What is your dream job?
Artist. I have always been a painter but to do it full time and get paid for it … bring it on!

11. What is your opinion on reality TV shows?
I love the Food Network. Past that, Season One and Two of Survivor were innovative, now everything is just crap!

12. What stresses you out?
OHIP and the hospital system.

13. Do you consider yourself a risk taker?
To a certain degree — I ALWAYS travel alone, all over the world. Biggest risk I have taken? Going back to school at age 37. Once this medical crap is over, then I'll work on the graduation.

14. If you could foresee the outcome of one event or moment in your life, what would it be?
I would like to know if I am going to survive this hellish tour through lung cancer or not….this has not been a pleasant journey and there are days when I am ready to give up so that would be a reasonable answer.

15. If you were in a big crowd and were trying to get a celebrity's attention, what would you yell?
Just to confuse them and to see if they really know what's going on in the world in general, I would ask them, “So, what do you think about the ongoing war between Canada and Argentina?”

16. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Viewing my slides from when I was a child I know I am never going to be thin. I guess I would say I would like to wake up tomorrow morning with all my medical problems done and gone.

17.What actor would you choose to play you in a movie?
Kathy Bates — talented, loud when she needs to be and she has bigger boobs than I do.

18. If you could have three wishes fulfilled, what would they be?
No more terrorism or wars.
That for one year all the money from sports (Salaries, admissions, monies spent on memorabilia, etc. etc. were spent on education and homelessness. Truly be happy —— I don't know what it will take but it is out there somewhere.

19. Do you believe in love at first sight?
Lust, yes. Love, no —- it's too complicated of an emotion to feel by just seeing someone.

20. When and where was your last vacation?
Seattle in April 2005 for my friend's wedding. It was so great to be with “that” family and have great times …. And I shopped so much I had to buy a second suitcase to bring everything home in.
