Project L.E.A.R.N. deemed a success

As another Thanksgiving passes, another bout of Project L.E.A.R.N. comes to an end — until next spring anyway.

Overall, this year didn't see any out-of-control situations or people — although numerous notices and charges were laid.

There was only one fire this year compared to the 16 of last year, and total Criminal Code charges were down from 2008.

During the last week of the project, 164 Provincial Offence Notices were handed out with 99 being given to students and 65 to non-students. Nine Criminal Code charges were laid with two students and seven non-students being charged.

The total numbers for the five weeks Project L.E.A.R.N. was in effect are 1,657 Provincial Offence Notices — 1,170 regarding students and 487 for non-students. There were 81 Criminal Code charges for the five weeks as well — 20 charges for students and 61 were non-students.

London Police Services believes that the increased police presence around the campuses and neighbourhoods surrounding University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College may have contributed to the decrease in problems, said Const. Amy Phillipo, media relations officer. They also noted the collaborative effort between the college, the police and the Fanshawe Student Union helped to make students and residents aware of what's at stake when they party.

Project L.E.A.R.N. will begin again in Spring 2010.
