Lohan collection creating buzz for Ungaro

Fashion mishaps on the runway happen a hundred times every season; designers are constantly scrutinized and critics swarm to have their opinions heard. If you pay attention to the fashion world, this is obvious. But to those who don't pay quite as much attention, I'm sure would be oblivious to who's hot this season and who's not. Sure, it's important to me, but it seems that the rest of the world is only interested in the fashion mishaps when a celebrity gets involved, interested enough to air it on the radio or advertise it on the main page of Yahoo.ca.

Lindsay Lohan has become somewhat of a muse- she's been named the artistic director of Emanuel Ungaro's Spring/Summer 2010 collection. She made her debut with Ungaro at Paris Fashion Week, Sunday October 4, collaborating with Chief Designer Estrella Archs. Critics had a field day and tore apart the collection and Lohan's influence on it almost immediately. It was said that they didn't have high expectations in the first place, but the skimpy dresses and plunging necklines were labelled trashy and out of context.

However, Mounir Moufarrige, President of Ungaro as well as designer Estrella Archs, were still pleased with the outcome. They chose Lohan to help work on the line because they wanted to give Ungaro a younger and ‘cooler' makeover. Even if the ratings weren't all good, the publicity they received was incredible. Moufarrige even said that he believes celebrities are the best way to attract attention, so it leads me to believe that they had more than Lohan's supposed talent in mind when hiring her.

I'll be honest; the collection wasn't that much of a disaster. Some dresses were quite short, and possibly the colour pink could have been used a little less, but it wasn't horrible. It just proves though, that there are many preconceived notions about Lohan, and the fashion flaws were publicized out of necessity because of the familiar name that went along with it.

Does Lohan know what she's doing when it comes to fashion? Lately it seems that any time she's been in the press it's to do with her jail stints or party lifestyle. We'll give her some credit- she's been spotted at all the right places so far this year; front row at the G-Star Raw Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Show, she was photographed at the launch of Armani Exchange Watches in Los Angeles, and at the Matthew Williamson New York Store Opening during Mercedez-Benz Fall 2009 Fashion Week in NYC. Yes she can afford to wear it, and I'm sure she's got stylists and personal shoppers to help out too, but just because one surrounds themselves in it, does it equip them enough to be able to design their own stuff?

The list of celebrity-turned-designers is long, but after careful consideration I've noticed that most of them actually have been quite successful and taken seriously. There's Russell Simmons who founded his Phat Farm line in 1992, JLO by Jennifer Lopez which has recently expanded to fragrance and swimwear, and most notably, Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. clothing and accessories line which has seen huge success and incredible reviews yearly. The list of celebrities goes on, but the main point is that these new business ventures really do work, because of the exposure. Already famous celebs have the leg up in fashion because they've already established a fan base, and the publicity they get beats that of a regular designer any day.

I've heard the saying that any publicity is good publicity, and I think that in this case, Lohan still is coming out on top.
