Bonk: The science of sex has never been so hilarious

Did you know that Marie Bonaparte, great-grandniece of Napoleon, got her clitoris surgically moved? Twice?! This was after she discovered that women with a smaller distance between their clitoris and vagina are more likely to orgasm from vaginal intercourse.

Intriguing? Yes. Cringe-worthy? Very! But that's what makes this book a great read.

Bonk by Mary Roach cracks the world of science and sex wide open with entertaining and jaw-dropping facts and stories.

While science is involved, non-scientists can breathe a sigh of relief because the main topic is something most humans have in common — knocking boots.

Here are some other zingers that'll make you blush, giggle and gasp:

- Fake penises — otherwise know as the AMS Malleable 650 Penile Prosthesis. These models come in two types - bendable (yes, you just bend it into position) and inflatable. For the inflatable version, the surgeon inserts a small bladder of saline or air above the patient's pubis bone. How does one get it to stand at attention? Squeeze the scrotum, which has a bulb in it attached to a plastic tube. Apparently, the inflatable version “seems more natural.” Hey, at least you know if something happens to it — there are options.

- In a letter to the editors of the British Medical Journal, a doctor saw a female patient who, after she had sex earlier in the day, discovered that something inside her latched onto and ripped part of her husband's condom off. To add to it — this unidentified “grabber” had a hold of it so tightly that she couldn't pull free. It turns out it was her own cervix with the vise grip!

- Guys often seem to argue and boast about their size — so here's some information that will add some fuel to the fire. Gynecologist Willibrord Weijmar Schultz conducted MRIs that revealed how much of the penis is actually hidden beneath the surface of the skin. A penis's “root” is apparently two-thirds the length of the “pendulous part.” So let's say you're about six inches — you could easily argue that it's really 10.
