Seys is turning heads as freshman

One star is shining the brightest on the undefeated Falcons women's volleyball team.

First year player Katie Seys is leading the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) West division with 15.67 points per game, and is a vital reason why the Fanshawe Falcons are off to a perfect 4-0 start in the regular season.

Seys began playing competitive volleyball during elementary school, and started playing club volleyball in London for Lloyd Rumble (Fanshawe's current women's coach) and the Forest City volleyball club when she was in grade eight.

Winning was something Seys was accustomed to, after enjoying a stellar high school career at Oakridge in London.

“Our last year we won OFSAA,” Seys said. “ My second last year, grade 11 we got bronze, and then grade 12 we were the underdogs, and we went to OFSAA and we won the quad A division.”

Seys said she is happy with her choice to attend Fanshawe, as she turned down multiple scholarships offers to play volleyball in the United Sates, including Eastern Michigan.

“It was an easy step to stay near home,” said Seys

“My club coach was going to be my Fanshawe coach, the program that I wanted to go into eventually isn't even available at university, so I thought Fanshawe was a good choice and a good team.”

Seys is currently in a general program, but has aspirations to study Dental Hygiene.

In terms of performing on the volleyball court, Seys said she is still getting used to having new teammates but is impressed with the overall improvements of the team thus far.

“I think that it gets better for me every time, the more we practice I get used to my setters, so it is always really hard with a new setter, getting to know you, and how you like the set,” Seys said.

“Every time we play and every time we practice we get better and better, and I'm having a lot of fun with it.”

Seys will hope to continue her dominant play as she leads the Falcons to what is hoped to be an OCAA championship.
